"'When Your Students Push Your Buttons' is not about fixing or changing kids. This approach is for teachers who don't like how they feel when their button gets pushed. It's for anyone who wants to be able to respond to situations as their best selves."
—8th grade teacher

"With the 'Buttons' approach, I had more energy at the end of the day. I wasn't as exhausted emotionally from the behavior of my students when I left my room."
—4th grade teacher

Agenda

Part 1 is a five hour day covering the following agenda. Part 2, if desired, is a five hour day given 4-6 months later for deepening the work with new concepts, strengthening the progress from Part 1, and sharing successes and failures in the application of Part 1.

This workshop includes a teacher workbook and involves active involvement, small group work and exercises for both teacher/student and teacher/parent interactions.

The concepts are the same as those in the agendas for both the When Your Kids Push Your Buttons parent workshop and certification training.

A. The Core Principles for Teaching Children.
1. Students want to be successful. No student is happy being manipulative or out of control.
2. Positive influence requires connection.
3. A student's behavior is symptomatic of an internal state.
4. All needs are of equal importance.
5. Fostering greatness requires understanding and acceptance.
B. Recognizing Your Buttons and What They Trigger.
C. Agendas: Understanding both yours and your student's and how they interact.
D. Bridging the Gap.
1. How easily your best intentions can get derailed.
2. How to avoid sending your student the messages you least intend.
E. The Roots of Behavior: Defining and understanding behavior as your CLUE to its meaning.
F. The Emotional Chain Reaction: The cognitive model to understanding our reactions.
G. Identifying Your Assumptions: The real culprit behind your triggers.
H. Reframing Your Assumptions: Finding the key to changing perceptions so that connection can be made.
I. The Eight Habits of Defusing Your Buttons
